The collection, almost entirely from 1866-1869, is correspondence between Samuel Hall in Omaha and his mother in Princeton, Ind. Topics include the new bridge across the Missouri River, the new railroad from St. louis, Hall's working conditions in Omaha, life in Princeton, and the heavy drinking done by the young men in that town.

Hall, a native of Princeton, Ind., served in the Civil War while quite young. He then moved to Omaha, Neb., to work in his uncle's hardware store. He regularly sent money back home to his widowed mother in Princeton, Catherine Graff Hall. He died at the age of 21.
